Fourteen Miles of Canals Off Lake St. Clair
The lake that gives St. Clair Shores its name was charted and christened Lac Sainte Claire on August 12, 1679, by French explorers including Sieur de la Salle and Father Louis Hennepin; French settlers who arrived around 1710 called the shoreline L'anse Creuse, or "Hollow Cove," because it was swampy and largely unfit for development at the time. The city didn't incorporate until 1951 -- just before that, it was recognized as the largest village in the United States -- and today it carries roughly 14 miles of residential canals, concentrated around the Nautical Mile, plus more than 6.5 miles of open Lake St. Clair shoreline.

Homes built along St. Clair Shores' canal network and lakefront sit closer to a permanent water table than almost anywhere else in this service area, on ground the original French settlers themselves described as swampland. That proximity means seasonal lake levels and canal seepage are as relevant to a water-damage assessment here as storm rainfall is, and a plan for one of these homes has to account for groundwater intrusion at the foundation, not just a leak from above.
