From Village of Lochmoor to Lakefront Suburb
The land that became Grosse Pointe Woods was part of Grosse Pointe Township, created April 1, 1848, from the southeastern portion of Hamtramck Township. It incorporated on January 4, 1927, as the Village of Lochmoor, with Edmund C. Vernier as its first village president; the governing body's first meeting was held, notably, at the Detroit Motion Picture Company studio on Vernier Road.
Older Lakeside Foundations and Storm Exposure
Nearly a century of continuous residential building along the Lake St. Clair shoreline means Grosse Pointe Woods carries some of the oldest foundations in this service cluster, many predating the modern grading and perimeter-drain standards used in newer construction.
